The Clarecastle Sewage Scheme, a landmark project spearheaded by Uisce Eireann – Irish Water in collaboration with Clare County Council, marked a significant stride in environmental engineering in Clarecastle, near Ennis, Co. Clare. This initiative was critical not just for its technical accomplishments but also for its role in preserving the ecological integrity of a vital water resource. The primary goal of the project was to cease the release of untreated wastewater into the River Fergus and Shannon Estuary, a practice that was detrimental to the local ecosystem and the community’s relationship with these important waterways.

The Port of Clare in Clarecastle holds a significant place in Irish history, particularly as a central hub for mid-Clare’s maritime and trade activities. Established as the chief port of the region, it played a vital role in the local economy, exporting a wide range of goods including oats, wheat, butter, timber, flour, and lead ore from the Ballyhickey Mines. These were mainly traded with British ports such as Liverpool, Glasgow, and London, with coal and timber being the primary imports. Today, the large grain-stores, old ship’s anchors, and the quay-wall stand as relics of a bygone time, with the area now being an active leisure spot for locals and visitors.

This expansive project involved constructing a new, state-of-the-art wastewater pump station near the existing Quay Road Pump Station, complemented by a 1.8km long rising main pipeline directed towards the Clareabbey Wastewater Treatment Plant. The scope of our work was comprehensive, including the development and installation of crucial infrastructures such as advanced gravity sewers and overflow systems, alongside an array of mechanical and electrical components essential to the new station’s functionality.

Our involvement in this project went beyond mere construction. It encompassed the intricate design, thorough testing, and meticulous commissioning of the new systems, ensuring adherence to the highest standards of quality and efficiency. Our team worked in close coordination with utility providers and engaged actively with the local community, navigating the project’s unique challenges while strictly complying with health, safety, and environmental regulations.

The successful completion of the Clarecastle Sewage Scheme within the allocated timeframe and budget demonstrates Shareridge’s capacity to adeptly handle large-scale civil engineering projects. More importantly, it underscores our dedication to enhancing the quality of life in Clarecastle. By restoring the health of the River Fergus and Shannon Estuary, we have not only improved the environmental landscape but also reinforced the community’s connection with these waters that hold immense historical and ecological importance. The completed project  now stands as a fine example of how modern engineering can foster sustainable development and environmental stewardship, safeguarding vital water resources for future generations.
