Newmarket-on-Fergus Watermain Rehabilitation Project
Ennis Road and Ballycar Road
Shareridge acted as PSDP, PSCS, Designer and Main Contractor for the Newmarket-on-Fergus Watermain Rehabilitation Project. The project was undertaken on behalf of Irish Water, in conjunction with Clare County Council.
The works took place along the R458 Ennis Road and R470 Ballycar Road and included the design and construction of a combination of approximately 900 meters of old problematic uPVC and aged Cast Iron Watermains, as well as full carriageway resurfacing. The primary considerations included the mixed nature of the surrounding environs, water usage requirements, traffic flow and priority customers.
The new watermain was installed by open cut trenching lift and lay. In the interest of minimising disruption to the traffic flows, a large majority of the works were carried out under extensive traffic management arrangements.
Throughout both the design and construction of the project, there was continuous stakeholder engagement with local customers, business owners, schools, statutory undertakers, Clare County Council and Irish Water.
The Shareridge delivery team successfully met the key project objectives by maintaining and safeguarding the water supply to the village of Newmarket-on-Fergus and its environs.
The project involved
- Design and construction of 350m of 250mm HDPE and 450m of 180mm HDPE watermains, together with associated valves and fittings;
- Rationalisation of the old 200mm uPVC and 125mm Cast Iron mains;
- Security of supply for the area;
- Adequate mains sizing for fire flow to local residents and businesses;
- Mains installed by pipe bursting and open cut trenching;
- Removal of public side lead services;
- Significant customer engagement and stakeholder liaison;
- Resurfacing works totalling approximately 1500 sq.m.
